Escarole: Fall is upon us and it's a good time to cleanse the system a little. This first-of-the-season bitter green will do the trick. Eat raw with a sweeter dressing to balance the bitter flavor or cook to mellow the flavor. Is a tasty addition to soups! Store in plastic bag in fridge and wash before eating. Radicchio: Firs of the season! Also known as Italian chicory, this beautiful bitter green has a slightly bitter taste which mellows when grilled or roasted. Store in fridge and wash before eating.
Broccoli: We were amazed to see these beautiful bouquets of green in the field! Rich in fiber and vitamin C, this brassica always adds a flavor to soups, salads, and stir-fries. Store dry in plastic bag in fridge and wash before using.
Stir-Fry Mix: Bright and beautiful and full of vitamins and minerals! This is a mix of kales, collards, and chard. Chop and sauté in olive oil or butter for a lovely side-dish. Also tasty raw. Store in plastic bag in fridge and wash well before using. If you find any unwanted visitors, try soaking in salted water and then rinse.
Tokyo Turnips: This ancient veggie is one of the earliest to be cultivated and was a staple before the potato. It is rich in fiber, calcium, and vitamins A and C. These beauties can be eaten raw or steamed and have a deliciously buttery crunch. Remove the greens and store in separate plastic bags in fridge and wash before eating. The turnip greens are amazing sauteed!
Sweet Peppers: These sweet and versatile peppers have a great crunch are a great addition to salads, stir-fries, and are perfect for stuffing. Store in crisper in fridge and wash before eating.
Eggplant: These are of the Black Beauty variety and has a wonderful taste and texture. They are deliciously sweet, but to draw out moisture or any bitterness, cut into slices and salt, then leave out for 15 minutes and pat dry before cooking. Store in fridge and wash before eating. Enjoy!
Leeks: These large alliums are rather mild in flavor and simply melt to perfection when sauteed. Use in soups, stir-fry, or in place of onions in other dishes for a delicious and more subtle flavor. The green tops are great for making stock! Store in fridge and wash very well before using.
Green Tomatoes: Green is the new red! These tomatoes are unripe, but are perfect for frying up or for making a green tomato relish. See this week’s recipes and our online recipe archives for some ideas! Store on counter and wash before using.
Fuji Apples OR Asian Pears: The tasty apples are from our friends at Coco Ranch in Davis and are certified organic. These Fujis are green with a pink blush and are great for snacking on or baking. The Asian Pears are from our friends at Terra Firma Farm in Winters and are certified organic. They are great for snacking on or slicing into a salad. Store in fridge or on counter and wash before eating and enjoy!
Baby Pumpkin: These gorgeous little pumpkins are the perfect size for your box and make a great pie or soup– not meant for carving! Store in a cool, dark place. Should last for 4-5 weeks if stored properly.
