Navel Oranges OR Tangelos: These beautiful fruits are either from our farm or from our friend Nacho at Twin Girls Farm near Fresno and are QAI (Quality Assurance International) certified organic. We’ve been friends with this family farm for a long time and see them every week at the Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market and yes, they do have twin teenage girls. They sell some of their goods to Purity, so that will explain if it has a market sticker on it. Stores well in fridge. Peel and enjoy! Pomelos OR Grapefruit: These delicious citrus are from our orchard are from Twin Girls! The pomelo is like a large grapefruit that may be yellow or greenish in color and deliciously sweet. They may be a bit harder to peel, but are definitely worth the effort! These fruits last better if they are stored in the crisper of the fridge.
Italian Flat Leaf Parsley- *bonus extra! The beautifully clean, crisp flavor adds depth to many a dish! Store in a plastic bag in the fridge and use rather quickly.
Spinach: From our transitional fields meaning it is not (yet) certified organic. Please contact us with questions about transitional produce & organic certification; we’re happy to explain how we keep the items separate. We finally entered our third year of transition to organic on our leased piece of land — we’ll be able to have the parcel certified sometime this month! May be muddy (click on the spinach link to see why). To clean, first rinse quickly to remove mud chunks. Then fill up a bowl with cold water. Remove leaves from stems & all yellow leaves. Put in water, swish, & let soak for 5-10 min. Lift leaves out of water, rinse & blot/spin dry. Use the discarded water for your houseplants! Store in plastic bag in fridge!
Lettuce: Enjoy this new crop of fresh greens for salads & sandwiches. From our transitional fields and are not (yet) certified organic (see spinach above). Store in plastic bag in fridge. Remove yellow leaves & wash well before use.
Stir-Fry Mix: Bright and beautiful! From our transitional fields (see spinach above) and is not (yet) certified organic. Chop and sautee in olive oil or butter for a lovely side-dish. Also tasty raw. Store in plastic bag in fridge and wash well before using.
Spring Onions: Enjoy these scallions raw in salads and add to omelets, soups, curries, and stir-fry for a milder onion flavor. From our transitional fields (see spinach above) and has hollow, round leaves. Wash well and remove bottom quarter-inch before consuming.
Green Garlic: This young garlic has a milder and less bitter bite than garlic cloves and sweetens when cooked and can also be eaten raw. It has flat leaves with v-shaped cross sections. From our transitional fields (see spinach above) and is not (yet) certified organic. Store in fridge and use within a week. Enjoy!
Collards: These luscious green leaves are a great source of beta carotene, vitamin C and calcium. These hearty greens must be cooked a little longer than other greens, but are well worth the wait. Store in fridge and wash before eating.
Savoy Cabbage: This beautiful head of cabbage with it’s crinkly leaves, is amazingly sweet with a more delicate flavor than other cabbage varieties. Try wrapping fish in the leaves and steaming or stuffing with rice, potatoes, or ground meat. It adds a little something lovely to soups and it a great addition left raw in salads. Keep in crisper and wash before eating.
Apples OR Dried Peaches: These Pink Lady apples are from Smit Orchards in Linden, CA and are certified organic. Keep in the fridge or on the counter (depending on how you like them) and wash before consuming. The dried peaches are from Good Humus Farm in Capay, CA. CCOF certified organic. They dry their ripest fruit each year. The fruit is unsulphured and dried in the hot summer sun. Keep these dried peaches in your fridge. Great in rice dishes (pilafs), chopped and tossed into a salad, or minced and mixed with soft goat cheese.
