Our great connection with James and Caitlin, the owners of Blue Bottle Coffee, allows us to feed our citrus trees on their used coffee grounds. After the farmers market each Saturday, we pick up their coffee grounds and bring them back to the farm. On Thursdays when Kiki delivers CSA boxes to their coffee bar and roastery in Oakland, he picks up even more. He says his truck always smells like coffee.
Citrus trees thrive on spent coffee grounds because they are acidic and contain lots of nitrogen fertilizer, which feeds the trees. About once a year, we apply a thick covering around the base of the trees and by the end of the year it is all gone sucked in by the worms.
