IMG_2617.JPG These walnut trees were planted almost month ago and are now bursting into life. The walnut trees are the last to start growing around here, very late compared to the plums blooming in early February. We have 35 trees which are just rootstocks onto which will be grafted the fruiting stock in September. Our goal now is to establish a good root system and a nice young shoot for grafting. The walnuts are planted in two rows on the western boundary of our northern most section. They will provide nuts for us all to eat but also wind protection and shade for the animals too on very hot days. Nineteen years ago I planted Pecans on land that we rented then but really I have very little experience growing nuts. We have plans to plant Pistachios and Almonds next winter. I remarked to someone last week that the farm is always changing.
